Beans And Rice Baby Food Recipe

These Vegetarian Baby Burrito Bowls are a meal the whole family can enjoy and a great way for baby to develop their pincer grasp! Beans, avocado, and brown rice are wholesome foods for baby and you! If your baby isn’t ready for finger foods, simply puree this meal to the desired texture and consistency.

Here’s the DL on my current mom problem. My baby is nearly 9 months old and only wants to slurp foods– read: milk from the mama source, smoothies, and squeezes. He refuses the spoon and easily gags on soft nibbles of finger foods that “should” be developmentally appropriate. Yes, we even gag and spit up on quickly dissolvable puffed cereals that are broken in half.

This would happen to the RD mom that wants her child to eat a wide variety of nutritious foods with different textures, but it’s just not happening like the baby books suggest. But why am I fooling myself?? Parker hasn’t ever followed baby book progressions, to my type-A personality’s demise.

Green Bean Baby Food (stage One)

When Dr. Sonali Ruder of The Foodie Physician reached out for me to feature a recipe from her new cookbook, Natural Baby Food, I was pumped to read what she had to say about feeding wholesome nutritions foods from babies to toddlers. There are over 150 recipes in this book!

I’m a big fan of her book– especially when I read her advice on, “What solids should I introduce first?” This simple question receives so many opinions, and to be honest it boils my blood when mom’s hear the same watered down advice from their pediatrician– start with baby cereals, then fruits, then veggies then meat. So many moms take that old advice and start their baby on processed grain cereals that aren’t even whole grains! When in reality,  it doesn’t matter what the heck you start off with as long as it’s soft and the right consistency for baby to eat safely. (Of course there are still foods to avoid, like honey and milk and maybe certain allergens, just to name a few). Dr. Ruder shares my opinion on this topic too and I love that she supports the latest evidence in feeding.

In fact the American Academy of Pediatrics now states that “there’s no medical evidence that introducing solid foods in any particular order has any advantage for your baby.” According to Dr. Ruder, “you may just as well start with a vegetable or fruit puree and meats can be introduced at an early age.” The current recommendations are that meats, such as turkey, chicken and beef should be one of the first solids added to the breastfed infant’s diet because breast milk is typically low in iron and zinc, two nutrients crucial for the developing baby!

“Beans and legumes like chickpeas and lentils are great vegetarian sources of protein and are also high in iron.” I love to add beans to a “smoothie” for Parker, or we opt for the bean based veggie squeezes.

And according to Dr Ruder, “If you are going to start your baby out on cereals, there are plenty of nutritious whole grain options like brown rice cereal, barely, or oatmeal.”

So my adapted strategy with feeding Parker is to continue to give him foods in drinkable form and also provide foods like this Vegetarian Baby Burrito Bowl at the same meal that he can pick up with his fingers and explore…. and I will try to breathe and pray that he learns to chew food fully before he swallows. Why does this mom thing have to be so challenging?

It HAS to obtain the other 9 from food, which is why they are known as ‘Essential Amino Acids’.

In order to obtain the complete proteins they need, it is important for those following a vegetarian diet to combine two or more sources of incomplete protein (such as rice and beans).

It isn’t absolutely necessary to combine these food sources in one meal - it’s fine if your baby consumes both within a 24 hour period.

But using a recipe like this one allows you to feel confident that your little one has consumed complete protein on any given day.

This dish also benefits from the addition of avocado – a great source of healthy fats – and apple, which provides a deliciously tempting sweetness.

*When your baby is at least 6 months of age, we recommend leaving apples unpeeled, since peeling an apple strips away most of its nutrients. Please read our page ‘Should I Peel fruits and Vegetables for Baby?‘ to learn more, to help you decide whether or not to peel produce for YOUR little one.

Dice the avocado instead of mashing it and overcook the rice a little, which makes it stick together so it’s easier to pick up.

Here's how to cook and serve to your baby along with plenty of recipes to help make introducing beans easy and fun!

Best Bean Recipes

If cooked to soft, beans can be offered to babies as soon as they’re ready to start solids, usually around 6 months. It’s important to remember that your baby is unique and that rather than going by the calendar, you need to make sure your baby is DEVELOPMENTALLY ready to start solids.

Beans are classified as a legume (also called pulses), along with peanuts, peas, and lentils. This is a family that packs a powerful punch when it comes to nutrition.

Beans are SO great for babies! They are loaded with the essential nutrients babies need to grow and thrive, including iron, zinc, folate, protein, carbohydrates, and fiber.

And while colorful fruits and vegetables are considered to be the best source of phytonutrients, beans are also a great source for these antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and other health-promoting compounds.

There's no need to avoid these foods completely as they offer so many beneficial nutrients that are essnetial for proper growth and development.

Not to mention, early introduction to a wide variety of flavors and textures is key in minimizing picky eating down the road.

If your baby becomes gassy but doesn't seem to be in discomfort, there's no reason to worry. If your baby gets extra gassy after eating a certain bean, just don't overload them with those foods. You can also try different varieties as your baby may do better with certain beans than others.

For instance, my baby did well with all the beans that were served except for black beans. But after about 3 exposures, she seemed to tolerate just fine.

Depending on the size and shape, beans can pose a choking risk. To reduce the risk, smash/flatten them, removing any skin that comes off. And follow the age-based serving suggestions shared below.

The Ultimate Guide To Beans For Babies

If you're cooking the beans rather than using canned, make sure they are soft and easily smushed between your thumb and forefinger.

It's also very important that you ALWAYS serve food at the table where your baby is sitting upright at a 90 degree angle. Even foods that aren't considered to choking hazards can be dangerous if given while baby is lying down, crawling, walking, etc.

In regards to allergies, soybeans are one of the top allergens so be sure to introduce them separately. While it's not impossible, an allergy to the rest of the beans is rare.

Red Beans And Rice

Did you know that there are nearly 400 types of beans?! Here are the most common ones that you're likely to find at the stores.

ALL beans are fantastic for babies. I highlighted the two essential nutrients during the first year in the chart above, and as you can see, they are pretty similar in their nutritional profile.

It’s true that legumes contain antinutrients, such as phytic acid, lectins, saponins, and tannins, that reduce the absorption of certain nutrients, including iron, zinc, and calcium.

However, many other healthy foods, like grains, leafy greens, nuts, and seedsall contain antinutrients. So does this mean we should limit or avoid them? Of course not.

Instead, alwaysaim for variety and balance! Unless beans are all you are serving to your baby, the benefits outweigh the risks of consuming antinutrients.

While it's an extra step, I highly recommend soaking. It will not only decrease cooking time but will also help the beans cook more evenly and make them easier to digest.
